General Guide for
Planting Trees
- Keep plant roots moist at all times. Store
in a cool place until you are ready to plant, but DON'T SOAK
PLANTS IN A BUCKET OF WATER;
it will damage the trees.
- The plant should be planted at the same
depth as it grew in the nursery or ½ inch deeper. This could
be several inches above where the side roots start.
- The hole must
be dug larger and deeper than the roots stick out so the roots can
go down and out without curling. Very long roots
should be pruned rather than curled.
- Fill dirt loosely around roots
(we do not suggest using peat moss). Then add water to the hole until
it is about ¾ filled.
- Finish filling the hole with soil
and pack firmly to eliminate air pockets.

When to Plant Trees
Fall is an excellent time to
plant trees. Container plants or balled-and-burlapped plants may be
planted at any time the ground is not frozen,
except very hot weather.
Plant barerooted trees in the late fall, winter,
or early spring when they are dormant.
Considerations Before You Plant
Species selection is critical
to insure that a tree will "fit" its
planting site. Consider the following:
- A tree's future size
- Shape, and overall appearance
- Foliage texture and density
- Presence of flowers, fruits and fall
coloration
- Sunlight, moisture, and soils requirements
- Cost
- Ongoing maintenance requirements
Consult good references or talk to a nursery owner or other professional
about selecting the right tree for your site.
